LASG HAILS FELA ANIKULAPO-KUTI ON HISTORIC GRAMMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, has congratulated the family of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, on his posthumous recognition with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, making history as the first African artist to receive the prestigious honour.

The award was conferred on January 31, 2026, at the Grammy Special Merit Awards in Los Angeles, United States, and was received on his behalf by his children: Yeni, Femi, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka described the recognition as a landmark achievement and a proud moment not only for the Kuti family but also for Lagos State, Nigeria, and the entire African continent.

According to her, the award reinforces Lagos’ enduring role as the cultural heartbeat of Africa and a nurturing ground for globally celebrated creative icons.

She said: “The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture remains committed to preserving Fela’s legacy and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Lagos State through sustained support for the arts, creative industries, and cultural diplomacy.

”This historic recognition affirms Fela’s immeasurable contribution to global music, culture, and social consciousness as his music remains a timeless force, boldly confronting military dictatorship, corruption, social injustice, and the oppression of the masses, while amplifying the voice of Africa on the world stage, nearly three decades after his passing.”

Reacting to the honour, the Kuti family described the award as a symbolic moment that bridges generations while acknowledging the growing global recognition of African music and culture.

It should be noted that beyond music, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was a cultural revolutionary whose Afrobeat sound and fearless activism influenced generations of global artists. His work continues to inspire artistic expression, resistance, and dialogue across continents.
