Lagos Assembly Calls for Bye-Elections in Mushin, Ibeju-Lekki, Somolu

The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to direct the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct bye-elections in Mushin, Ibeju-Lekki, and Somolu.
This follows the deaths of three councillors, leaving the wards without representation.
During Thursday’s plenary, Hon. Prince Akinsanya Nureni representing Mushin Constituency 1 raised the issue, stating that the affected wards have been left vacant. He requested that the House intervene to ensure that fresh elections are organised promptly.
Hon. Esho Kazeem of Mushin Constituency 2 confirmed the death of a councillor in his area and said no replacement election has been held.
He supported the call for immediate action.
Hon. Kehinde Joseph urged the Assembly to formally write to the governor to direct LASIEC to commence the election process.
He also suggested observing a minute of silence for the deceased councillors and sending condolence letters to their families.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa ordered a minute of silence and instructed the House clerk to write to the governor.
The deceased councillors are:
Oluwakemi Rufai (Ward C, Ibeju-Lekki), died August 13, 2025, 17 days after inauguration.
Zainab Shotayo (Ward C3, Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA, Mushin), died August 18, 2025, 22 days after inauguration.
